Sanae Takaichi, who became Japan’s first female prime minister in October 2025, visited the White House to strengthen ties between the two nations, particularly amid rising tensions linked to the US military actions in Iran.
Known for her conservative stance, Takaichi has maintained a close relationship with Trump since taking office. During her visit, she even pledged to gift the United States 250 cherry trees to commemorate America’s upcoming 250th anniversary—a symbolic gesture highlighting the long-standing friendship between the two countries.
However, the meeting also drew controversy after Trump made a joke referencing the Pearl Harbor attack, which many considered inappropriate.
The remark sparked backlash online, with critics calling it insensitive and unnecessary.
Despite the awkward moment, Takaichi appeared focused on diplomacy. She arrived in Washington with proposals aimed at stabilizing the global energy market and reassuring the US that Japan remains a dependable ally, especially as tensions in the Middle East continue to rise.
She also praised Trump openly, suggesting that he had the ability to bring about global peace, reinforcing their political alignment on key issues such as energy security and concerns over Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
Amid the discussions, Takaichi made a lighter, more personal comment about Trump’s son, Barron, who had recently turned 20.

She described him as a tall and handsome young man and asked Trump to pass along her birthday wishes. The remark drew laughter from those present and seemed to ease the atmosphere.
